Abstract

High termperature stress is a major constraint to increased productivity of cotton in Pakistan. A technique based on
physiologicalcharacteristicsisthereforerequiredtoscreenthecultivarsforheat-tolerance.The membranethennostability
testconducted onfullygrownyoung leavesofcottonisanappropriatetechniqueforscreeningbreeding material for heat-
tolerance.Genotypes testedshowedwidevariationsinadaptationtohightemperaturestressandcouldbebroadly grouped
intothreecategoriesonthebasisofcellinjurylevel.Genotypesshowinghighmembranethermostabilitygavehigherseed
cotton yield.
